  • What is a short-term residence permit?
  • What is a long-term residence permit?
  • Differences in terms of conditions
  • Duration and renewal difference
  • Which is preferable in which case?
  • Impact on citizenship

Short-term and long-term residence permits constitute an important distinction between the residence status of foreigners in Turkey. Both types of permits allow the foreigner to stay in Turkey legally; however, there are significant differences in terms of duration, conditions and consequences.

Short-term residence permits are generally granted to foreigners who are in Turkey for a specific purpose. It can be applied for real estate ownership, commercial activity, tourism, research or similar reasons. This permit is granted for a certain period of time and often needs to be renewed.

Long-term residence permit is a more stable and permanent status. This requires uninterrupted residence in Turkey for a certain period of time, not being an obstacle in terms of public security and fulfilment of the relevant conditions. A long-term permit offers a stronger legal status than a short-term permit.

The main difference between the two permits is the duration and renewal obligation. While a short-term permit is renewed regularly, a long-term permit has more permanent consequences. Therefore, it is important which type of permit is suitable for those who plan to stay in Turkey for a long time.

Application documents may also differ. While factors such as real estate, income, purpose and accommodation are at the forefront in a short-term permit, the duration of residence and continuity are more important in a long-term permit.

Some foreigners think that a short-term permit is sufficient and do not make long-term plans. However, a long-term residence permit is an important step for those who aim for permanent settlement. If citizenship is being considered, residence periods should also be taken into account.

In conclusion, short-term and long-term residence permits are different legal statuses. Choosing the right type of permit increases the success of the application.
